10 Toxic Double Standards That Harm Both Men AND Women.
Despite living in an increasingly egalitarian society (at least in the West), double standards still prevail. Women are just as guilty as men when it comes to propagating double standards. Until we abolish double standards, men and women will continue to be frustrated and blame one another for their issues. Let’s look at some of the most common double standards that are still prevalent in society.
1. Normalizing abusive behaviours in women not in men.
Although statistically women vastly outnumber men as victims of domestic violence and abuse, it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t happen to men. Cases of domestic violence and abuse are likely to be under-reported in men as they face far more stigma and are expected to be able to defend themselves. Things are changing, but at a slower rate.
It’s still seen as acceptable though for a woman to slap and hit a man, whilst if a man did that to a woman, he’d be arrested. Violence is never ok. Just because a woman is seen as physically weaker doesn’t mean that she can’t cause harm. There have been many women who have stabbed and beaten their male partners.
