Toxic masculinity is a term used to describe a set of rigid traditional, societal, and cultural beliefs that dictate how men should behave. These clear-cut beliefs are often harmful, radical, and sexist. There is a large emphasis placed on maintaining traditional masculinity and gender roles. A man’s role is to be a protector and a provider. Men shouldn’t cry or show weakness. They also shouldn’t engage in roles and behaviours associated with “femininity” such as staying at home to look after children or submissiveness.

As much as the Western world has tried to challenge and admonish these toxic beliefs about masculinity in order to create more equality for both genders as well as prioritise men’s mental health, there are just as many men and women who still cling onto these outdated and harmful notions. It’s not just the Andrew Tates of the world that you have to worry about, but the women who support toxic masculinity. You just have to go on social media to see that there are many influencers dedicated to bringing back traditional masculinity.

I love writing. I may be controversial but I'm not afraid to say it how it is.
