People don’t value relationships anymore. How mindsets towards commitment have changed.

Thanks to the rise in situationships and serial dating, the value placed on relationships has increasingly diminished. Unless you’re engaged or married, being boyfriend and girlfriend doesn’t hold the same weight anymore. People treat adults in a relationship as seriously as they treat a pair of pre-teens who are “boyfriend and girlfriend.” People still view marriage as the only legitimate form of a relationship.

Even some of my friends still use the terminology “seeing each other” when talking about me and my boyfriend despite us having been together for over six months and making it clear that we’re in a committed and serious relationship. The phrase “seeing each other” denotes two people who are not in a committed relationship and who don’t have much interest in a long-term future together. It also implies that you’re just “seeing how things go.”

The problem is that a lot of people don’t take dating seriously. People are seen as disposable. A lot of people are confused and shocked that my boyfriend and I don’t believe in marriage. We believe that marriage doesn’t make any difference to a relationship especially if you’re already deeply committed to one another.
